K. MARY TYRRELL, CHIEF INSTRUCTOR (N.V.Q. Assessor)

Aerial view of our Centre. We’re big enough to cope, yet small enough to care!

The advantages of attending a Training Centre are:

  • The horses and their tack (equipment) are in good condition.
  • The instructors are qualified. Not only in riding techniques but also in First Aid.
  • We are insured up to £2 million for any one claim. (No matter where you ride you are advised to ensure that the establishment has adequate Public Liability Insurance)

We are approved by the British Horse Society as a Training Centre for career students who wish to take B.H.S. qualifications, up to B.H.S.A.I. You may rest assured, therefore, that if you ride with us you will be correctly taught on responsive, well schooled horses and ponies, whose equipment is of a good standard and maintained with an eye to safety. Details of our Working Pupil Scheme are available by clicking here. We hack out on Bodmin Moor, to which we have almost direct access, reducing road work to an absolute minimum. The moors are totally natural, with breathtakingly beautiful views over the surrounding countryside. In the spring we see gambolling lambs, young calves, and the occasional ferral ponies with their foals at foot. Buzzards and many other wild birds abound. One can experience nature at its best!

DRESS : Proper riding wear is not just fashionable - it is also practical and enables one to ride better. However, for the beginner who is not yet committed. jeans or leggings and smooth soled shoes with low heels will suffice. We can provide helmets.

Cantering on the lunge without stirrups, helps the rider to develop a deep, secure, seat.

The T.M.International School of Horsemanship may seem a rather pretentious title for a small riding school on the edge of Bodmin Moor. However, here is a typical group of summer guests. Why not find out for yourself what attracts people here.

NON RIDERS PLEASE NOTE: We are NOT a trekking centre. Our horses and ponies are used for cantering and galloping on the moors where conditions permit and if they come to a ditch they will jump it. The moors are hilly in parts and wide open. They are NOT suitable for beginners who have not yet learned to control a forward going horse. We shall be pleased to give you lessons until we consider you have reached a standard which will enable you to ride out SAFELY and reduce the risk of your falling off and injuring yourself.

The horses refresh themselves at Withybrook pool.

BOOKING: IT IS NECESSARY TO BOOK IN ADVANCE, AT THE VERY LEAST THE DAY BEFORE, AS THE HORSES HAVE TO BE GROOMED AND ALLOWED TO DIGEST THEIR FOOD BEFORE BEING USED.

PLEASE TRY TO CALL BETWEEN 8.00pm and 8.30pm. WE SHALL REQUIRE THE HEIGHT, WEIGHT AND DETAILS OF THE ABILITY OF EACH RIDER. YOU WILL BE ALLOCATED A HORSE ON THE BASIS OF YOUR ABILITY, SO DO NOT EXAGGERATE IT! REMEMBER, THE PACE OF A GROUP OF MIXED ABILITY MUST BE THAT OF ITS LEAST COMPETENT MEMBER.

DUE TO THE HILLY NATURE OF THE LOCAL TERRAIN WE HAVE A MAXIMUM WEIGHT LIMIT OF 90 KILOS (14 STONES OR AROUND 200 LB.)

RIDING IS A RISK SPORT

Your choice to ride is voluntary. We take care to provide suitable and safe horses and ponies for our customers, but all animals can be unpredictable. We strongly advise you to take out full personal accident insurance cover. We regret having to raise our prices, but the huge increases in the cost of Public Liability Insurance leave us no alternative.

SUNRISING RIDING CLUB

It is an advantage for people who ride regularly with us to join Sunrising Riding Club. Members enjoy lower rates and may enter Club events on school horses and ponies. It is an ideal way for inexperienced riders to gain experience in competing in a friendly, informal atmosphere. There are gymkhanas held for junior members (and seniors who enjoy 'letting their hair down' and having a bit of fun!) and simple little events which prepare them for more serious competition later in life. The majority of members do not (yet!) own their own mount, but some do and they, too, are very welcome to bring their horse or pony along and take part. The prime purpose of these events is enjoyment. Some indeed are purely social and enable members to meet over a glass of wine and chuckle over their mounted exploits! The juniors also have social events, e.g. Bonfire Night, Easter Egg hunts, Dress my Pony for Christmas, etc., and are encouraged to take British Horse Society Progressive Riding Tests to monitor their continuing improvement.

JUNIOR MEMBERS meet regularly at the weekends, arriving in the morning with a packed lunch and spending the day learning to look after ponies and generally helping around the stable. the older, more experienced ones giving a lead to the younger members. They are divided into groups according to ability and receive a lesson or go out on a hack when they have reached the necessary level of competence. The charge is £17.00 for the day.
